BOMB Blast 52: BWC Flounders

This is a post about the sad state of bubblegum affairs. In a problem we never dreamed would happen, suddenly around 2007-2008, we begin getting complaints that bubblegum blowing quality was deteriorating, and to the day this is written there is not really any evidence that this trend is reversing. This has caused entries and interest in the BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP to plummet. Why this has happened is anybody’s guess.

Never had we anticipated such a crises. We call on bubblegum companies to step forward and try to help us out of it with quality made bubblegum, but whether they will hear the call or not remains to be seen.

BOMB Blast 51: First Bubblegum Bubble Cards Created

2010 brought about something that harkens back to the days of Frank Fleer. That was when we created a bubblegum card set of bubble blowers who had competed in the BWC. We are sure Frank Fleer, Gilbert Mustin and Walter Diemer would have loved this. Bubblegum cards for great bubble blowers.

We hope that one day bubblegum cards will reappear.

BOMB Blast 50: First International Winner of a Major Bubble Blowing Contest Named.

The BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP had a most exciting moment when we declared the first winner of a major bubblegum contest from out of the United States. Stunis, a bubble blower from London who is reknown for blowing bubbles that are thought of as works of art, became a BWC World Champion, the first non-American ever to accomplish such a feat.

The BWC had indeed taken world champion bubble blowing international.

BOMB Blast 49: First BWC World Champion Named

Just days after the news of the death of Susan Montgomery Williams came the crowning of the first World Champion of The BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP. BG, who, at the time this is written is now a seven time BWC World Champion and is the BWC’s all time greatest competitor, entered the inaugural contest and blew the biggest bubble ever entered in the BWC. That bubble is also the biggest bubble ever entered in a bubble blowing contest.

BOMB Blast 48: Susan Montgomery Williams Dies

Another non-BOMB Blast. Oct. 1, 2008. What a bittersweet day in bubblegum history. After the long push to get the BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP up and running, the day after entries for the first BWC closed, came word that the great Guinness World Record holding BOMB Squad Hero, Chewsy Suzy had died, one week after she fell into a coma from a brain aneurism, days short of being able to see the first BWC World Champion being crowned.

Her career included 4 Guinness World Record bubbles, the invention of the Chewsy Suzy Cinch, the co-creation of the BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, and many national TV appearances. The lady was a bubblegum publicity making machine, and if it wasn’t for her and her contributions to bubblegum there very likely would be no big bubble future for anyone to contemplate.

The BOMB Squad wanted to make a very big splash, and they chose the date August 8, 2008, 8-8-08, to do it. Since one story about Walter Diemer’s invention of bubblegum happened “in early August of 1928″ it was deemed that 8-8-08 would be bubblegum’s 80th anniversary, and plans were set to launch on that date The BUBBLEGUM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP (The BWC), bubblegum blowing’s greatest contest.

The BWC is an internet bubble blowing contest at that is available to anyone over 18 who can post a picture of themselves blowing a bubble. It is a contest developed by the BOMB Squad in a way that they would have liked to seen when they were coming up. A contest different from one a manufacturer might put on. A contest which is not about any particular brand of bubblegum, but rather about seeing just who can blow the actual biggest bubble with as few restrictions as possible. A contest that is basically open anytime a person has the urge to blow some super huge bubbles.

The plans are for the BWC to lead bubblegum into it’s future, securing the chance for anyone who would like the possibility of bubble blowing fame and glory and to leave their own mark on bubblegum history.j

BOMB Blast 45: The BOMB Squad Created

After a flurry of Susan Montgomery Williams/Joyce Samuels versus BUBL publicity, it was finally agreed to that both sides had a valid point in their search for giant bubble greatness, and they all merged into what became known As The Blowers of Mega Bubbles, BOMB Squad, with Susan Montgomery Williams, Joyce Samuels, Dr. Enaught T. Wiseham, Earl “The Gum Bubble Coach” Hartwell, and Bobby “BOOM BOOM” Bickeron becoming the original “BOMB Squad Heroes.” Since that time Susan tragically died and Earl Hartwell has resigned.

The goal of The BOMB Squad has been to create enough publicity to create a new future for bubblegum based on what it has always been from the beginning. The persuit of giant bubblegum bubbles.

BOMB Blast 44: BUBL Created

Believing that the world of publicity didn’t adequately reward the blowers of the actual biggest bubbles ever, the Blowing Unbelievable Bubbles Bubbles League was started by Dr. Enaught T. Wiseham and Earl “The Gum Bubble Coach” Hartwell, Canada’s greatest Bubble Blower, as an answer to the Guinness World Record and Susan Montgomery Williams.

There claim was that the limitation Guinness placed on the number of pieces a person could chew to break the record was an artificial one, and that consideration should be given to people who could blow bigger bubbles by chewing more pieces of gum. So their idea was to allow people to chew an unlimited amount of pieces. This was the strategy used by Wiseham to blow the biggest bubble ever blown.

BOMB Blast 43: Dubble Bubble National Bubble Blowing Contest Ends

2005 marked the last year of the Concord Confections Dubble Bubble National Bubble Blowing Contest. It was likely the longest running contest for blowing bubbles and featured the biggest prizes ever given to winners.

This contest, I believe, led to what I call the “golden age” of bubblegum. It was apparently monumentally profitable, and it elevated Bruce Weiner, in my mind, to a position of prominence in bubblegum history equaling Frank Fleer and Walter Diemer. It was Weiner, who, in my opinion, proved the point of what I think Walter Diemer was all about. Making those bubbles as big as possible and then constantly driving that point home.
